This time of the year is a time for reflection… how fortunate we are to do the work of bringing the arts to students everyday. So, as an act of Thanksgiving please tell us one good piece of work you’ve been busy with and for which you are grateful.

I am an educator in the Merrymeeting Adult Ed. System and practicing artist. I was recently invited to work with high school students at the Brunswick High School. My art making process includes using a process called Decalcomania (wet-in-wet paint with plastic wrap), which was originally adopted by surrealist painter, Ocar Dominquez. Since these high school students were studying surrealism, this discussion was in line with their studies and allowed them an opportunity to appreciate some of the technical aspects of painting. We did a 2-day workshop beginning with a discussion of the history of surrealism and some of the social events that triggered the surrealist art movement. I hung examples of my work up so that the students could see different ways this technique could be developed. I then did a demonstration of the technique and invited the students to do their own decalcomania painting. On the second day, we looked at the students work and discussed how they could develop their images further and I helped them problem solve with their individual images. Feedback from the instructor was that the students enjoyed the workshop and began to stretch their visual vocabulary. We are looking forward to an exhibit of this work soon at Brunswick High School.
