Having an interestest in internet based electronic art makes me optimistic about consolidation. Having larger districts with more schools on the same network will help create the need for more electronic communication and associated arts. I also look forward to the use of more distant learning that new districts will make practical.

Does anyone really know how it will effect the whole of education in Maine? I understand the need for change, but small schools will eventually be effected by closing or loosing most of the staff due to numbers. I also look forward to more electronic art, but I have found middle school kids to not be so keen on electronic art on a regular basis.

True there will be unintended consquences from consolidation. I predict that small schools on the fringes of districts will over time be consolidated. But if nothing changes demographics will close those same schools with less options.
My window on Middle School electronic art is my son who is in seventh grade. He is very into his laptop and makes alot of videos, sldeshows and webpages. Although I do not recall him doing much in his art class. Plus there is a derth of art that goes into the MySpace world and sites like Devient Art. I suspect that young teens may be doing more out side the curriculum in regards to electronic art.
On a side but related note ,I am thinking about an art project similar to mail art but using cell phone sizes screens. It might be an interesting way to collaborate next year. I have used a art collaboration site called sito.org over the years and have always wanted to do something in the school context. Perhaps create a grid of a hundred screens to creates a larger image?
