Since we’re celebrating Music in Our Schools Month, Youth Art Month and National Theater in Our Schools Month I know many of you mark these occasions in a variety of ways. Please tell us what you do to recognize kids and their accomplishments in the arts. You might be plan these for during March or another time during the school year. Thank you for sharing your ideas which will help others in planning celebrations, large and small.

I try and celebrate my student’s work everyday. I have several display cases and bulletin boards. I keep the kids work rotating, so every student is recognized by their accomplishments. I also let them know every day how lucky I am to have such great students!

I started planning more activities for Youth Art Month a couple of years ago aside from continuously hanging student art displays. I work in two K-2 schools. last year we had Stilson School of Irish Dance come and perform. We had physical movement artist Gretchen Berg come in a do a workshop with all of our classes and students went to the Portland Museum of Art. Immediately following their field trip, students drew a picture of their favorite work of art and wrote about it in their classrooms. I had banners made a few years ago that say Youth Art Month, Celebrating The Arts, that I hang near the front doors with student art and in writing why art education is important. This year, I gave classroom teachers art reproductions and they agreed to work with students to create a whole class story around the artwork. The stories and art reproduction will be displayed on classroom bulletin boards. I really feel that making the arts more visible helps to make the case that we are providing something valuable to our students.

My students and I have been doing quite a bit of music that we showcase via a blog and monthly podcast. We usually use home grown electronica that we do using Acid Pro but this month podcast features the student singer/ song writer group from Madison Memorial High school. I have included electronic music in my art and vocational classes for a few years now. We have collaborated with other schools around the globe via the Global Virtual Classroom contest. I am looking for other schools that might want to contribute material for our podcasts. Please check us out and leave some feedback on our blog.

Forgive me for being a bit off topic. I just added the this RSS feed to my blog and was wondering it anybody else in the Maine Art Ed Community has a blog or podcast that we could exchange feeds with? It would be a great way to foster interaction between programs.

We are podcasting some non techno music that might interest the more traditional listeners. Our March Podcast comes fro the Madison Memorial High School’s singer song wrier group and wi have a single portfolio piece that is a multi track recording of an orginal piano and clarinet piece performed by the artist playing both parts. We would love to showcase student artist from other schools before summer gets here.
